My Design is Cut Off on the Edges or
What is a Printer's Unprintable Area

Keywords: printing

Last updated: April 1, 1998

Q: My labels are not printed completely! They are cut off at the edges. What's wrong?

A: The problem is not the software, but a combination of your printer and the layout of your label sheets. (For example the 3-up label sheets from NEATO are a big problem!) Your labels are positioned too close to the edge of the paper for virtually all printers.

Unfortunately printers cannot print right up to the edge of a sheet of paper. Generally speaking, the unprintable margin is about 1/4" on the sides and 1/2" on the top and bottom for inkjet printers (sometimes even more). Even laser printers have this problem to a more limited extent.

To solve your problem, there are two things you can do:

1. Design your labels so that they do not print too close to the edge. Then it won't matter that it is clipped.

2. Use another label sheet where the labels are positioned away from the edges, and are more suitable for inkjet printers.

Label manufacturers are becoming more sensitive to this issue, and are now designing more and more new products to alleviate this problem.
